Introduction to Writer
Like many other authors the compulsion to write is a fact of my life. However due to occupational, family and other obligations it had previously not been possible for me to give enough attention to it - there had always been more important or urgent things to be done. It was only during the last three years that I had for the first time gotten the opportunity to give more attention to this dream of mine. I started off writing Afrikaans poetry, motivated by my mother, Rita Bruwer, who passed away in 2006, but who to the end maintained her love for writing Afrikaans verse. On this website I thus include a section for her verse in recognition of her contribution. Since starting writing poetry I have completed at least 200 poems which I subdivided into four titles as well as a number of loose poems which I’m starting to publish here. (Thus far I have exclusively written poetry in Afrikaans.)
2005: Dis-harmony 2006: Grim Reaper 2006: The Flying Dutchman and other narrative poems. 2007: Alienation (in process)
Due to my love for the theatre I’ve further decided to concentrate on writing plays - which may hopefully still develop into the writing of scripts for film or television. Due to currently living with one foot in South Africa and the other in Canada I’ve decided to tackle themes that would be relevant in both countries. My plays are therefore written in both Afrikaans as well as English. Thus far I have completed, or am in the process of completing, the following:
2005: Die Laaste Woord The Last Word 2006: Die Goue Uur The Golden Hour 2006: Die Duister Keuse The Dark Choice 2007: Die Verwronge Web The Twisted Web 2007: Die Dringende Oproep
(Eenbedryf)The Urgent Call
(One Act play)2007: Die Kain Sindroom The Cain Syndrome
In practice I thus find myself as a so called “late bloomer” trying to write open a place for myself in a new country and a new field. Due to the fact that I’m currently writing in relative isolation I’ve decided to use the internet to open up channels of communication towards interested parties and possible collaborators which would enable me to share my work and to receive feedback from them. Any constructive comment will be welcomed.
